Manchester Travel information
Manchester, England's northern capital, has a lot to offer visitors to the city. From rolling countryside to a major metropolitan center with the best in sport, music, shopping, dining and nightlife, there's a lot of ways to enjoy Manchester travel.
Liverpool may have been the home of The Beatles, but Manchester is the most happening city in northern England when it comes to music. The Hollies, The Bee Gees, Oasis, The Sex Pistols, Take That, The Happy Mondays, Doves, Morrissey and The Stone Roses are all from here. The wider cultural framework of the city is similarly extensive, more than 90 museums and galleries to choose from during your Manchester travel stay.
The city has also got a wonderful atmosphere of architectural fusion, with the futuristic shapes of its contemporary buildings sitting alongside the spires and gargoyles of times past. One of its newest and most impressive structures is the Beetham Tower, a 171-meter tall glass edifice that is the tallest building in the UK outside London. There's also the Central Library – inspired by Rome's Pantheon – which is the largest municipal library in the world.
One significant element of the historical landscape of the city is Manchester's heritage as a driving force of the industrial revolution. This powerhouse city of the 18th and 19th centuries has now got a legacy of large scale buildings that have been revived and restored in a number of innovative ways. For example, the former Cotton Exchange is now the world's largest theatre-in-the-round.
Manchester is also a significant sporting center: it's home to one of the most famous rivalries in the history of soccer – Manchester United and Manchester City. You can get a great sense of this sporting history during your Manchester travel, because both teams' stadiums are open for public tours. Plus there's many more state of the art facilities for other sports which were installed for the 2002 Commonwealth Games.
When it comes to dining, Manchester is a city that has it all. You'll find every kind of food here, from Michelin starred restaurants to eateries with food from all over the world to great speciality food markets. The city also has one of the most thriving nightlife scenes in all of the UK, with many of the country's most famous nightclubs and largest live music venues at your disposal.
If you want to head out of the city during your Manchester travel, there are a number of towns, villages and wide open spaces you can go to on a day trip. The Peak district, for example, is just one of a number of amazing swathes of lush green countryside that surround Manchester. Another top natural sight is the city's canal network, which contributes to the relaxing vibe of this large urban center.
